Key Benefits of Filament Winding over Manual Layup



Better quality and batch uniformity

Because filament winding is a machine managed process there are no random layup errors. Uncontrolled layup errors are one of the biggest drawbacks of the manual layup process. This leads to higher accuracy and precision and further contributes to our lower manufacturing costs.

The best method for manufacture of CFRP

Filament winding is theoretically the best method for manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) as all fibers are placed under constant tension, in a single plane (cf. weaving which crimps the fibers) and in an optimal geometry that has no sharp bends or kinks. This results in the highest possible strength to weight and stiffness to weight ratios.

45 degree fiber bias

Our current winding pattern employs a +45/-45 degree winding bias which results in our rims and wheels having very high lateral stiffness (side to side), but lower than average radial stiffness (up and down). This results in wheels built with our filament wound rims being very stiff and responsive to acceleration, while enhancing road holding and lowering the occurrence of tire pinch flats or rim damage due to impact.

Key Benefits of CTL over Traditional Manual Layup



Perfect finish quality

The layup is perfectly formed outside of the rim thus there is no possibility of presence of bubbles or wrinkles that can occur when carbon fiber is laid up inside the mold, as is the case with other manual layup rims

One piece layup

Because CTL layup consistes of single pieces of UD fabric there are no overlaps, no misalignment and no breaks or cuts in the carbon fiber. The benefits of this are decreased weight and increased strength of the rims

Better uniformity

CTL utilizes a custom made tool set to lay up the carbon fiber layers outside of the rim mold, around a solid mandrel. This allows us to lay up the entire rim in one piece, without needing to cut the carbon fiber into individual patches.

Unique

CTL process results in unique looking carbon rims as there are no visible joints or segments. In fact they appear to be painted except for the fact that the UD carbon fiber surface is clearly visible.

Wind tunnel tested aerodynamics

Venn Rev 35 rim series is the only OEM rim with wind tunnel data. You can be confident that our rim does not just look aerodynamic, but that it actually is aerodynamic. The results show that the Venn Rev 35 rims compare very well to much deeper profile rims while offering superior handling in cross winds and lower weight.





Venn Rev 35 TCC tubeless clincher wheels - rim brake

The 35mm deep and 27mm wide rim profile and the +45/-45 degree carbon fiber winding angle results in wheels that are laterally very stiff, but vertically compliant increasing the responsive - ness and road holding ability when compared to traditional carbon wheels. The wheels are compatible with clincher, or tubeless tires that when used with a sealant virtually eliminate the inconvenience of having a flat tire away from home, or during a race.

Venn Alter 44 TCC tubeless clincher wheels - rim brake

The Venn Alter rims are made using our novel CTL manual layup process. The Alter are designed to accommodate wider tires. The 44mm deep and 26mm wide U-shaped profile provides a very strong platform allowing us to reduce the rim weight to just 430g and still deliver exceptional strength. The Venn Alter wheels are the only carbon wheels in the market that are made primarily for cyclocross or gravel bike use. The rims are compatible with clincher or tubeless clincher tires that when used with a sealant virtually eliminate the inconvenience of having a flat tire away from home, or during a race.
